Amit Rohidas, a defender for the Indian hockey team was awarded Sunday with the Biju Patnaik Sport Award for outstanding performance. The award was presented by TK Behera, Odisha’s Sports and Youth Service Minister. Rohidas hails from Sundergarh in Odisha. Amit was presented with a citation as well as a cash award in the amount of Rs 2 Lakh. Kalu Charan Choudhury, a veteran hockey coach from Odisha who has produced many international and national players and continues to coach young hockey players, was also awarded the Biju Patnaik Sport Award for Lifetime Achievements in the Promotion of Sports and Games. He was awarded a cash and citation of Rs 35,000 each. Biju Patnaik Sports Award was presented to Shiba Prasad, a Badminton coach for para-players. He was awarded a cash award in the amount of Rs 1 Lakh as well as a citation. This year’s Biju Patnaik Bravery award was presented to Trailokyanath Parida of ASI Police, Cuttack. He was presented with a cash award, a silver medal, and a citation.
Chief Minister Naveen Patel, in a video message, congratulated the winners and said: “I extend my warmest wishes to all of your on the occasion for the birth anniversary Major Dhyan Chand’s legendary hockey player, which is celebrated as National Sports Day. This is a time when we celebrate this day in all its glory, joy and splendour. The Indian Hockey Teams’ performance at the Olympics is a tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, a legendary hockey player. “Hockey is a special sport in Odisha. Shri Kalu Charan Chaudhry has received the lifetime achievement award and Shri Amit Rohidas has received the outstanding performance award. Both of you deserve congratulations. He said that it was a tribute to Odisha’s coaches and players, who have contributed towards hockey development in the state.”
Patnaik also felicitated Shiba Prasad das for receiving the award for excellence as a coach. He is well-known for his contribution to Pramod Bhagat. Pramod Bhagat is sure to make us proud at the Tokyo Paralympics. Trailokyanath Parida deserves my admiration for his bravery. He has shown selfless service and set an example, he stated. Patnaik stated that Odisha’s model for sports has been praised all across the country over the past weeks. He said that the whole country loves Odisha because he supported the national hockey teams which went on to make history at the Tokyo Olympics. National attention has been drawn to our model of partnership and high performance centres. This endorsement is a testament to our investment, vision, and efforts in sport. This is an opportunity to come together and work with a greater commitment to bring sports to higher heights. The chief minister stated that he was certain that many more players and coaches will be inspired to bring glory and honor to the country and the state. The ceremony was chaired by Dilip Tirkey (Odisha Hockey Promotion Council), Bijaya Nayak (Executive Chairman, State Welfare Youth Board), and R. Vineel Krishna, Sports and Youth Services Department secretary, were present.
